The primary goal of the national infertility prevention program
is to provide routine screening and treatment services in family
planning and sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics for Chlamydia
trachomatis infection. The program is based on the premise that
timely treatment for Chlamydia trachomatis can reduce the debilitating
complications caused by this sexually transmitted disease, including
pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.
The project was legislated under the name of Infertility Prevention
Program and is a result of a collaborative agreement between the
Office of Population Affairs (OPA) and the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC).
In Region I (6 New England states), the regional advisory committee
has been created to develop guidelines and standards to assess and
reduce the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in the region. The
advisory committee is comprised of regional representatives from
Title X family planning agencies, STD programs, and public health
laboratories. Region I has developed a regional plan that outlines
the specific activities to be undertaken to control chlamydia and
chlamydia-related sequelae in the region. The advisory committee's
primary role is to oversee and approve project activities.
John Snow, Inc. (JSI), is responsible for managing the project.
Specifically, JSI is responsible for the coordination of regular
advisory committee meetings, which include subcommittee work. JSI
also provides technical guidance to the participating programs on
the collection and maintenance of data, the development of quality
assurance systems and project service protocols. JSI is also responsible
for the evaluation of regional data, coordinates training activities
associated with this project and provides technical support to the
state programs participating in this regional project.
